While planning for a new playground, Kendra Angell, former Burton PTO President, realized that physically disabled students were sitting by and watching others play. It broke her heart. It was Kendra’s dream that children of all abilities would be able to play together at Burton.

Kendra and other PTO members formed a committee and raised money through many fundraisers throughout the previous year, in addition to some very generous donations. The result was an inclusive playground for children of all abilities, and features an AeroGlider, double-wide ramps, and rubber tile surfacing. The slogan "The importance of one, the power of many," was integral to the planning and development and will be engraved on a marker at the playground as a reminder to all who visit.

"For some people, this is just a playground, but for others, it’s life-changing," Kendra said. "We're no longer sending a message to people with special needs that they're not as good or as capable as the other kids. We just broke down all the barriers and made disability irrelevant --and that's priceless." Additionally, adults with impaired mobility can also use the playground to be with their own children after school hours and in the summertime."
