NEW! Themed Play

Themed Play Overview

When kids build their creative thinking skills on our themed playground equipment, they’re also building a brighter future. A 2009 study on childhood development revealed that “no human being can achieve his full potential if his creativity is stunted in childhood.”1 Every play activity immerses kids in lifelike, 3-D make-believe, giving them free rein to take risks and practice adult roles in the safety of their own imagination.

Choose from any of our three kid-favorite themes—nature, castle, or nautical—or combine themes to create your own imaginary world.

How Our Themed Play Solutions Work

The fact is imaginative play helps kids build greater language and self-control skills, and become more flexible and creative thinkers. We designed our themed playsystems with these real-life developmental benefits in mind. Here’s how we did it:

Immersive Play Activities

Our themed play isn’t just window dressing—it’s an immersive experience. Every play activity builds on its theme. A nature panel, for example, becomes a microscope for examining real plants and rocks. A bouncing springboard looks just like a castle drawbridge, daring brave knights and ladies to “cross the moat.”

Three-Dimensional Environments

Unlike most other solutions, which rely on paint and flat sheet plastic to convey a theme, we create three-dimensional elements—like tree root climbers and towering pirate ship sails—that make the pretend feel truly lifelike.

Three Themes to Choose From

After conducting extensive customer research, we developed three distinct themed play experiences that are proven to be the most popular with kids:

Choose one of these themes, or mix and match themes to create your own world of make-believe.

Flexible Modular Designs

Our themed solutions are completely modular, giving you the flexibility to pick and choose components that fit your community’s budget and needs. For personal assistance designing your very own themed system, contact your local Playworld Systems representative.

The Research Behind our Themed Play Solutions

Our themed play solutions may seem like nonsensical imaginary fun, but they’re built on the latest research on the very real developmental benefits of pretend play.

  • Children who engage in socio-dramatic play have greater language and social skills, more imagination, more self-control and higher levels of thinking than non-players.1

  • Imaginative free play challenges the developing brain more than following predetermined rules does. By allowing kids to use their imagination to try out new activities and roles, it encourages flexible and creative thinking. 2

  • Studies show that children use more sophisticated language when playing with other children than when playing with adults. That’s because they have to provide contextual clues to the imaginary worlds they’re creating.2

  • A lack of opportunities for unstructured, imaginative play can keep kids from growing into happy, well-adjusted adults.2
